In these days of buying everything online, including your next Portuguese Water Dog family member,
please be vigilant in researching where your new pup comes from. Read our "Choosing a Breeder" page for more information. The links below provide paramount information on what to look for including specific names per state. See a more detailed report on our CHOOSING A BREEDER page.
Red flags include no testing available, No valid conformation on where the parents of your puppy reside, Not being able to see where your puppy actually comes from, mass market websites, USDA licensees, no vetting of buyers, and especially known puppy mill communities like Millersburg and Sugarcreek, Ohio.
High prices and cute pictures do not mean a healthy puppy. Click on an adult dog pedigree, if provided, to make sure the actual owner of the dog is in good standing. Many are from, or associated with notorious puppy mills. Thank you so much for your patience and responsibility!

The Albatross Did Follow
His papered name,
The Albatross Did Follow, found in verse from The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, is a poem about an albatross following a ship setting out to sea. Mariners have long romanticized this, hoping for a sign of luck in dangerous seas. We know we're lucky to share our lives with him. "At length did cross an Albatross,
Thorough the fog it came; As if it had been a Christian soul, We hailed it in God's name." -The Rime of the Ancient Mariner |
Now let's meet the girls!
Our girlies are first and foremost part of our family or extended family, so four litters are the max for our ladies. Of course, they continue to keep their role as part of the family, plus wholeheartedly take on the role of spoiled, sometimes bossy babysitters for future litters. 🥰
She's Got Moxie |
Spirited, intelligent, affectionate and curious with a beautiful, wavy, silver fox coat, and a personality that doesn't quit.
Moxie is happily energetic, athletic, and persuasive. A perfect combination of beautiful, brave, and comical make Moxie absolutely contagious. Oh, did I mention treat crazy? Moxie is always giving us the, "please just one more treat, I've been a good girl" look. Although we are not involved in the show ring, Moxie possesses the physical and temperamental qualities that conform beautifully to the breed standard. Moxie (and Shumpert) have helped fill many people's hearts with joy and love with their genuinely fantastic offspring. The endless complimentary emails, texts, photos, and phone calls from people that have Portie Club puppies in their home have filled our lives with as much joy as her puppies have given. A bit of sadness comes to me when I say that Moxie is now retired from having litters. Yes, Moxie could have easily continued to produce beautiful litters for several years to come. She is still young and in perfect health. But, being first and foremost a treasured member of our family, we wanted to be sure to keep her that way. Moxie can now enjoy being that perfect experienced "nanny" to Breeze and Poppy's little bundles of joy. We were diligent in making sure that Breeze and Poppy would have the necessary qualities, paired with Shumpert, to fill her shoes. Positively Poppy |
We couldn't have picked a better name.
Poppy is a girl's name of Latin origin, meaning "red flower." In slang terms, Poppy is dangerously beautiful, bright, sensitive, kind, highly amusing, engaging, affectionate to a fault, and beloved by all. Every one of these adjectives defines our Poppy from her stunning coat to her enchanting personality. If we're looking for a laugh, we can always count on Poppy. We often call her our little fainting goat because she melts to the floor under your hand when scratched. Whether it's flashing her beautiful hazel eyes to entice a treat or waiting patiently for an invite to hop on the bed, Poppy is tough to resist. When it's finally time to have a seat and relax, Poppy would much rather drape herself around someone's neck like a fluffy scarf than being stretched out beside them. She can never get too close. Poppy's undeniable beauty, whimsical, affectionate and charming personality, paired with Shumpert's unbeatable temperament and gentle ways will make for an outstanding litter sure to bring joy, laughter, and unlimited love. Summer Breeze, Makes Me Feel Fine.
Breeze is our overachiever. It seems there is nothing she doesn't excel in. Friendliness, intelligence, confidence, love, contentment, and excellent manners are just a few of her gifts.
From her sweet-as-pie personality to her beautiful hazel brown eyes, Breeze has it all. When it comes to whole-body booty shaking, she's the best. Her entire body wags in delight with her tail. Grabbing the closest toy or sock and whining with joy is her favorite way to greet. She is always so happy to welcome anyone that walks through the door.
Breeze is also an outstanding babysitter. She was always there to give Moxie a well-needed break with the puppies, a positive sign that Breeze herself will be an excellent mother. Her patience, nurturing nature, and loving disposition will serve her well in raising healthy, happy puppies that are sure to carry on her unbeatable traits.
